The cancer screening programmes for England are nationally coordinated. They are the NHS Breast Screening Programme, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, and the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
There is no organised screening programme for prostate cancer but an informed choice programme, Prostate Cancer Risk Management, has been introduced.

Childhood immunisations are an extremely important way of protecting your child against serious infections.
The immunisations are given by the Practice Nurses, and start from 8 weeks of age.
4-8 week Mother and Baby Check
The 4-8 week post-natal mother and baby check will be carried out by one of the doctors. This is to ensure that all is well with you and your baby. Please book this at reception, and remember to let the reception staff know what the appointment is for, as you will need a 30 minute appointment.
Health Visitors
If you need to contact a Health Visitor please call Wollaton Vale (0115 9287793) directly. The Health Visitor Team will be happy to advise on health issues for children under 5 years of age.
If you have a long term condition (also known as a ‘Chronic Disease’) it is likely that you will need regular health checks (usually once or twice a year).
At WPMC we will write to you in the month of your birth to let you know which check-ups you need. Please follow the instructions in the letter.
If you have a long term condition, and do not receive a letter, please discuss this with your Doctor.
We also have access to community nursing teams who specialise in certain conditions, for example: Diabetes, COPD, Heart Failure. Your Doctor or nurse will let you know if you need to be referred to these teams.
We offer a comprehensive family planning service. This includes general contraceptive advice regarding all available options. These include barrier methods, hormonal contraceptives such as the oral contraceptive pill or patch, long acting reversible methods of contraception known as LARCs (‘Depo’ injections, implants, intra-uterine devices). If you wish to specifically discuss the implant please book a telephone consultation with Dr Fairhurst, in the first instance. If you wish to specifically discuss an IUD, please book a telephone consultation with Dr Walsh or Dr Fairhurst.
Sexual Health
If you think you may have a sexually transmitted infection (STI, STD), then you need to be seen in one of Nottingham’s many GUM clinics, or sexual health clinics (Female: 0115 9627747, Male: 0115 9627745).
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to fill out a travel questionnaire, and hand this into reception (please note if you are travelling within the next 8 weeks we cannot facilitate this appointment).
Once you have handed in your travel form, you will then be booked a telephone appointment with a Practice Nurse, with an exact date and time of the call. During this telephone call, the nurse will determine if any vaccinations are needed and will then organise the appointment to have the vaccinations.
Wollaton Park Medical Centre is not a specialist travel clinic and anyone travelling to more than 2 destinations or visiting multiple locations on a cruise, then you will need to attend a private travel clinic.
Europe & Russia North America
Central America South America
Caribbean Africa
Middle East Central Asia
East Asia Australasia & Pacific
The surgery is unable to give Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies and Tick Borne Encephalitis.
It is important to submit your travel questionnaire at least 12 weeks prior to travel, as most vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Travel vaccinations need to be given at least 2 weeks before travel for them to be effective.
Dr Gareth Hicking is able to perform joint injections, which may have been recommended by your usual doctor, or, for example, by a member of the physiotherapy team.
Congratulations from everyone at Wollaton Park Medical Centre. This section is designed to keep you informed about the pathway of care for you and your baby as you progress in this pregnancy.
Our reception staff will have confirmed with you that you have had a positive pregnancy test and recorded the first day of your last period. You will then be advised to contact the Midwife team directly on 0115 8833100 (they are based at Wollaton Vale). The Midwife team will contact you to arrange a first visit, usually at home, to discuss your pregnancy. The midwife can be contacted at any time on 0115 883368 and she should be your first point of contact regarding any pregnancy concerns.
If you are not already doing so you should start taking a once a day supplement of Folic acid 400 micrograms and Vitamin D 10 micrograms. Folic acid should be taken at least until you are 12 weeks pregnant and Vitamin D should be continued throughout pregnancy and breast feeding. Both of these are available from the pharmacy as Pregnacare.
Your midwife will inform you regarding scans, appointments and the place of delivery of your baby.
Once your baby has been delivered there are a few key landmarks for you both:
Birth. In hospital your newborn baby should have a full physical examination by a doctor. If you are discharged from hospital and this has not taken place, please contact the practice immediately so that a doctor can visit to do this vital health check. Your midwife will visit you at home to support you and when she feels the time is right, she will hand your care over to the Health Visitor. Please register your baby with the practice as soon as possible after birth.
6 weeks. You and your baby should be seen by a doctor for a post natal health review. This takes 30 minutes so please ensure that when you book this appointment you inform the receptionist that you require a 30 minute appointment. At this the doctor will once again do a full examination of your baby and discuss with you any concerns. Please call at 4 weeks to book this appointment and also an appointment with the nurse for the 8 week immunisations.
8, 12 and 16 weeks. Your baby needs to be seen by our practice nurse for immunisation. Baby immunisation clinics are held twice weekly, appointments can be booked at reception. The nurse will explain what the immunisations are for and the protection that they give your baby. Please note that your baby is not safe to go swimming until completion of the second set of immunisations at 12 weeks.
We hope that all goes well for you during this pregnancy and we look forward to meeting your baby.
